Marie Barthès
Marie Barthès, based in Paris, France, studied at the National Superior School of Applied Arts and Crafts in Paris, earning a degree in sculpture in 1985. She had the opportunity to study with Serge Mouille, the French designer best known for his lighting designs. Under his tutelage, Barthès learned a variety of techniques for sculpting materials such as plaster, resin, metal, and specific techniques for molding. Barthès’ plethora of sculptural techniques include: embossing, perforation, hot gilding, stamping, copper wire embroidery, metallic transfers, die cutting, piercing, carving, and drawing with melted metal.
Barthès started her career in film and advertising, creating set decorations. Gradually, she developed her own universe and designed her first sculpture collection in 2009. Leather became her preferred medium. Her technical know-how and artistic sensibility appealed to the famous house Tassin, the leather label and French Living Heritage Company. Together, they created an exceptional set of 18 designs for Guerlain’s fragrance collection “La Petite Robe Noire.”
Barthès’ world is inspired by reality, contemplation, and observation. She interprets rhythms from nature, represents order and disorder, draws creativity from particles and cells so that each parcel of life is reflected in her works. Each composition is unique and unusual, confessing the poetic and sensual approach she has with her sculpted leather mirrors.
Member of Les Ateliers d’Art de France since 2009, Barthès has exhibited her works in designer and professional shows such as Maison & Objet and Révélations held at the Grand Palais in Paris, as well as exhibitions throughout France. The Mandet Museum in Riom, France, just added one of Barthès’ works to its permanent collection.
